ABOUT THE BIRTH COMPANION

Welcoming your new baby is a profound and joyful milestone, but it can also bring moments of uncertainty and questions you never expected. You deserve compassionate, personalized support throughout pregnancy, birth, and the early days with your newborn. Whether you are preparing for your first baby or expanding your family, I am here to offer evidence-based birth doula services, postpartum care, childbirth education, and newborn support. My goal is to help you feel informed, confident, and empowered at every stage of your journey.

As your birth doula, I provide steady emotional, physical, and informational support throughout pregnancy, labor, and birth. My role is not to replace your doctor or midwife, but to work alongside your healthcare team, helping you understand your options, communicate your preferences, and feel truly supported as you make choices that are right for your family. Evidence shows that continuous labor support from a doula can lead to shorter labors, fewer medical interventions, greater satisfaction with your birth experience, and increased confidence as you step into parenthood.

With more than a decade of experience supporting families in Frederick, Maryland, Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and the surrounding areas, I bring advanced doula training, postpartum expertise, infant care knowledge, and my extensive community background to every family I serve. My care is compassionate, respectful, and always tailored to your unique goals. Whether you need prenatal planning, childbirth education, labor support, immediate postpartum guidance, or newborn care, I meet you where you are with encouragement, practical skills, and unwavering support.

At The Birth Companion, every recommendation is grounded in current, evidence-based information rather than fear or trends. You deserve accurate information, compassionate advocacy, and the freedom to make informed decisions that reflect your values and birth preferences. Reviews:

“I wholeheartedly recommend Jess as your doula. That is the short version of my 5 star review!

The long version is this- you will not regret hiring her because she are invested in what she does as a doula. She pours her heart and soul into this, and it shows with how diligent and attentive she is with the before and after care. If it’s not obvious from her page or from meeting her, here is a hint: Jess is passionate about birth and helping women feel known, empowered, and strong during this intense period of pregnancy and giving birth.

Jess is compassionate, intelligent, empathetic, knowledgeable, and patient. She is all of these things with you, her client. Jess is on your side and will help you communicate your desired birth plan when the time comes, as well as help you prepare for how things may go differently.

I cannot speak highly enough of Jess. You cannot go wrong hiring her. Or getting to know her. 5 star character and heart.”

“My experience with Jess was wonderful. I wish I had her as my doula for my 2 previous (natural) births, but I wasn’t fortunate enough to know her yet. I hired Jess after she reached out to me on a Facebook post I made searching for a birth doula. We met and she told me all about her services and what to expect in the upcoming months. She was quite thorough. Throughout my pregnancy whenever i messaged her with a question or concern she was quick to offer a response. When the day arrived she was so incredibly helpful. She respected the boundaries I had for personal touch and were calm, clear, and confident in everything she did. When my water broke, my amniotic fluid emptied and my baby turned breach. I knew a cesarean was very likely and I was SO SCARED, but Jess was great at helping me to keep calm with gentle reminders to breathe deeply and peaceful details about cesarean births. We tried to get baby to turn naturally for an hour before I went into the OR. Jess met back up with me in recovery. Even though she was limited in what they were able to do because of me getting a c section I really believe she made a world of difference for me. I am and will forever be so grateful for her heart for this work and for her assistance in the birth of my third child. I give my highest recommendation in hiring her.”

Frequently Asked Questions:

What does a doula do?

A doula provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after childbirth. Unlike a midwife or doctor, a doula does not provide medical care. Instead, she helps you understand your options, communicate with your care team, find comfort throughout labor, and feel informed, confident, and supported every step of the way.

What is the difference between a doula, midwife, and obstetrician?

A midwife is a licensed medical provider who provides clinical care throughout pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum, while an obstetrician specializes in medical and surgical care during pregnancy and birth. A doula provides non-medical support focused on comfort, education, and advocacy. Many families choose to work with both—a midwife or OB for medical care and a doula for continuous personal support.

When should I hire a doula during my pregnancy?

The earlier you connect with a doula, the more opportunity you have to build a relationship and prepare for your birth together. I encourage families to reach out as soon as they begin considering doula support, rather than waiting until the third trimester. The Birth Companion offers monthly prenatal visits, giving us time to get to know one another, discuss your goals and concerns, prepare for labor, explore comfort measures and positioning, and build confidence throughout your pregnancy. Reaching out early also gives you the best chance of securing your preferred due-date availability. If you’re already well into your pregnancy, it’s never too late to reach out and see if I’m available!

Are doula services covered by health insurance or HSA/FSA?

Some health insurance plans, HSAs, and FSAs now provide coverage or reimbursement for doula care, although coverage varies by plan and location. Jessica Kent is registered with the State of Maryland and can provide her NPI number to help you determine whether your specific plan offers coverage.

How will a doula support me if I want an epidural or planned C-section?

A doula supports your choices, not a particular birth method—including epidurals, inductions, and planned or unplanned cesareans. She can help you stay comfortable and informed before and after an epidural, and with a C-section, she can help you prepare emotionally beforehand and support you through recovery and early bonding. Evidence-based doula care means meeting you where you are, without judgment about how you choose to give birth.

Does having a doula really make a difference?

Research has found that continuous labor support is associated with benefits such as a greater likelihood of spontaneous vaginal birth, fewer interventions, and greater satisfaction with the birth experience. Research published in the Cochrane Database has found that continuous support during labor can improve both birth outcomes and parents’ experiences. A doula offers that continuous, personalized support when you need it most.

How do doulas support partners during labor and birth?

A doula supports partners alongside the birthing person—offering guidance with comfort techniques, stepping in when a partner needs a moment to rest or eat, and helping them feel confident rather than overwhelmed. Rather than replacing a partner’s role, a doula helps them stay present, involved, and connected while providing reassurance and experienced guidance throughout labor.

What areas do you serve for birth and postpartum doula support?

The Birth Companion serves families throughout Frederick, Maryland, Washington, DC, Northern Virginia, and the surrounding DMV area. Whether you’re planning a home, hospital, or birth center birth, Jess can provide support wherever you’re giving birth within this region.

How do I choose the right doula for my birth?

Look for a doula with relevant training, experience, and a supportive approach that feels right for you and your family. Just as importantly, choose someone you feel comfortable talking with and trusting. Most doulas, including Jess, offer a free consultation so you can ask questions, share your hopes and concerns, and decide whether you’re a good fit before committing.

What does a postpartum doula do?

A postpartum doula supports your family in the weeks after birth with newborn care, feeding support, light household assistance, and emotional and practical support as you recover and adjust to life with your baby. Postpartum support can benefit any new parent, especially families without nearby support, parents of multiples, or those navigating a challenging birth or recovery.
